Do Forklifts Require Winter Tyres?
2022 has sped by, and we are now fast approaching the winter months. For forklift drivers, this can mean more limited usage of machines and material handling equipment. So, today Trucks Direct wanted to create a guide on forklift winter tyres and answer the question… does my forklift require winter tyres?
The answer is no… sort of. There is no special ‘winter forklift tyre’ that you can fit into your truck, but there is a better type of tyre for tougher weather conditions. The pneumatic tyre. We have discussed the importance of this tyre before in a previous article on the Trucks Direct site, but now that it is getting nippier outside, we thought it was time for a refresher.
As always, browse through our range of free guides on all things forklifts and warehouse culture. Or, share this with a fellow forklift driver today.
What Is a Pneumatic Tyre?
There are two types of pneumatic tyres, solid and cushion tyres. Solid pneumatic tyres are made of hard rubber, making them a versatile choice for the outdoor workplace. This type of tyre is not that dissimilar from the tyres on your car. The surface of the tyres provides a strong grip suitable for rough surfaces and uneven ground.
You can find machinery fitted with these on our website, specifically within our range of rough terrain forklifts, featuring leading brands such as JCB. Additionally, these tyres are a popular choice for industrial workplaces such as building sites and outdoor warehouses due to their puncture-proof surface, which is a huge advantage when operating a forklift on gravel. The tyres have a thicker tread which allows for a more long-lasting product as the chances of damage are minimised. The tyres can be fitted on both manual and electric forklifts.
Cushion or Solid? – Which For Winter?
For winter, the Trucks Direct team recommends solid, pneumatic tyres. This is due to their superior performance in tough conditions, such as rough terrains.
The same can be applied to harsh weather conditions, as the tyres offer improved grip than the cushion alternative. Simply put, pneumatic tyres are the closest thing to winter forklift tyres, and what yours should be equipped with for outdoor usage this winter season.
