What Is the Proper Way to Lift a Load with a Forklift?
When loading any forklift, you must ensure complete safety. This means utilising a daily checklist and inspecting attachments to make sure your vehicle is in good working order. Following these procedures, this article will discuss:
– Preparing to load your forklift
– What is the optimum position for a load to be in?
– Where should the heaviest side of the load be when carrying?
– 4 reasons why it is important to carry loads up to the heel of the forks
– Forklift loading instructions
Preparing to Load Your Forklift:
After completing operational and attachment checks and before loading your forklift, you must:
1. Ensure you are only carrying pallets or boxes
2. Check the load is suitable for loading (is it damaged?)
3. Secure the load with ropes or bindings if necessary
4. Check the brakes are working and chocks are in place
5. Inspect the ground to make sure it’s flat
6. Look at the door and ensure there’s a 5 cm gap compared to the height of the forklift
7. Note the maximum weight capacity and don’t overload
8. Take note of your surroundings for restrictions and obstructions
As per many forklift training courses, we often receive three common questions:
What Is the Optimum Position for a Load to Be in?
The forks should be tilted towards the ground with (at least) a 5 cm gap. Being too close to the ground could cause the material to scrape off, or could damage the floor or even snap the forks. Whereas, being too high or in the middle could cause injury.
Where Should the Heaviest Side of the Load Be When Carrying?
The heaviest side of the load should be closest to the front wheels of the forklift. However, it’s important to note the maximum capacity and not overload, even with an attachment.
4 Reasons Why It Is Important to Carry Loads up to the Heel of the Forks:
As demonstrated by Forklift Training, you must carry loads up to the heel of the forks to:
1. Keep the load centre as far back as possible
2. Keep the forklift and its load as short as possible for confined spaces
3. Maintain the stability of the forklift
4. Maintain the load stability against the fork arms and carriage/load guard
Forklift Loading Instructions:
1. Ensure you are using the right attachment (if any)
2. Use a sack truck to transport heavy loads or bend safely at the knees to pick up lighter loads (do not use the forks as a lever to raise or push loads)
3. Fasten your seat belt once ready to load/drive
4. Edge towards the pallet and stop a few inches from it~
5. Lower the forks and edge closer until the load touches the end of the carriage
6. Tilt the mast back so the heaviest part of the load is against the carriage
7. Lift the forks and ensure a 10 cm gap between the ground and the forks
8. Make sure the load is evenly distributed across both forks and won’t fall
