Your 2023 Guide to Forklift Tyres
Your 2023 Guide to Forklift Tyres
With all of the different types of forklifts, come lots of different tyres. Similar to the machines themselves, different tyres suit different applications.
Today, we’re going to explore the different types of forklift tyres and where they are best used.
The 3 Types of Forklift Tyres
Pneumatic
Pneumatic tyres are the same tyres that you’ll find on most cars. They offer a more comfortable operation with enhanced suspension.
Additionally, they give good ground contact and are your best bet for outdoor use. The only maintenance that these require is consistently checking the tyre pressure.
Cushion
Also known as solid rubber tyres, should be used indoors and on smooth, even surfaces. Made entirely of rubber, the puncture resistance is decent. These tyres can be sourced with or without a tread pattern.
Super Elastic
The super elastic tyres combine the puncture-resistance of cushion tyres with the comfort of pneumatic tyres.
This is why we recommend super elastic tyres in uneven environments where tyre damage is more likely to occur.
How Often Should I Change My Forklift Tyres?
For pneumatic tyres, it’s as simple as replacing them when the tread pattern is no longer visible.
But, for all other tyre types, it will depend on a few factors.
- Tyre quality
- Use and environment
- Environment temperature
- Driver skill/behaviour
Why Do I Need to Replace Forklift Tyres?
Much like the tyres on your car, over time worn-out tyres become a safety hazard to the driver.
If your tyres are damaged, underinflated or just generally worn out your forklift is more likely to topple over. Equally, worn-out tyres do not make for a very comfortable operation for the driver.
How Can I Prevent Damage to My Forklift Tyres?
Again, like car tyres, it’s a given that your forklift tyres will need to be replaced at some point. However, there are some things you can do to prevent any premature wear and tear.
Driver skill and behaviour are a cause of forklift tyre damage. Avoid the following when operating a forklift:
- Turning too fast
- Harsh braking
- Harsh acceleration
Stay on Top of Your Tyres
Staying on top of forklift maintenance is critical to operator safety. Trucks Direct and Trucks Direct staff have been accredited to carry out Thorough Examinations with our Thorough Examination procedure meeting the requirements of both LOLER 98 and PUWER 98 legislation.
