Your Guide to Safe Forklift Unloading
Forklift unloading can be a tricky job. In fact, it may be more difficult than loading. Once all your pallets and boxes are in place, it will be hard to see where you’re going. Provided you drive slowly and look around the load, the unloading process should be a breeze.
In this article, we will cover:
- Forklift unloading instructions
- What safety devices must be installed on the forklift?
Forklift Unloading Instructions:
1. Inspect the load to check if the goods are still undamaged and won’t fall
2. Check your surroundings for restrictions and obstructions
3. Line the load with the place you want to unload/offload
4. If using a lorry, edge towards the vehicle and raise the forks
5. Make sure pallet is secure on the lorry before reversing
6. If unloading on the ground, ensure the brakes are set
7. Lower the forks and make sure the load is secure on the ground before reversing
8. If unloading on a shelf or stack, ensure you are level with it
9. Lower or lift the forks based on the height of the shelf/stack
10. Edge toward the shelf/stack and make sure the load is secure before reversing
What Safety Devices Must Be Installed on the Forklift for Unloading?
The following safety devices will ensure an easy forklift unloading, be it a lorry, a shelf or another location goal.
1. Speed Limiter
Reduce the risk of speeding with a speed limiter. If you suddenly find yourself in a detrimental situation, such as employees walking in front of the forklift, it may be difficult to stop. A speed limiter will monitor reckless driving and restrict your speed once it reaches a certain limit, thus, preventing accidents.
2. Fork-View Camera System
We’ve already discussed that it could be difficult to see around your forklift while driving with loads. If this is the case, a fork-view camera will ensure you can always see where you’re going. Many products also monitor blindspots, further reducing the risk of accidents.
3. Levelling System
If your forklift’s controls are hard to manoeuvre or you still require training, it’s likely your levelling skills are subpar. While it’s important to learn this technique, we recommend purchasing a levelling system so you can easily unload your forklift.
4. Anti-Collision System
Even if you have excellent vision of your route, you may not be able to see the fork ends. An anti-collision system detects obstructions around the forklift, be it a wall, a colleague or a lorry, and stops you from hitting it. If you are close to something, a warning system will alert you so you can quickly brake.
5. Alarms
Installing alarms is the most important safety a forklift could have. There is nothing like a loud noise alerting you to an obstruction, telling you to brake before there’s an accident. Many other features may be expensive, but alarms are an affordable, all-rounder alternative to ensuring you don’t hit anything, even if you’re reversing.
